[Project Gutenberg](https://www.gutenberg.org/about) founder Michael Hart typed the United States Declaration of Independence into a computer and transmitted it to other users on a computer network, making it the first recognized version of an e-book. Today, Project Gutenberg is one of the largest collections of free e-books in the world. As we celebrate this [extraordinary milestone](https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2021/07/13/happy-birthday-to-the-ebook/), we reflect on how useful e-books are to conducting research from any location, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
