Public libraries have long been essential resources for job seekers and career changers. People use libraries to gain digital skills, explore new technologies, pursue educational programs and start businesses. Many libraries also offer access to employment services and training that pave the way for better jobs and career growth.

According to the Public Library Association’s [Public Library Services for Strong Communities Report](https://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2023/06/pla-releases-first-public-library-services-strong-communities-report), 78 percent of libraries offer job and career services, and 24 percent have workforce development programs. Here are six reasons why libraries should consider expanding their job and career services to include the skilled trades:

1. **Addressing Workforce Shortages / High Demand:** The skilled trades industry is currently facing a significant labor shortage. The American construction industry alone stands to lose more than 500,000 workers. Yet, there continues to be a high demand for skilled trade workers such as plumbers, electricians and HVAC technicians. By offering services that support blue-collar career development, libraries can [open doors to the skilled trades](/resources/opening-doors-skilled-trades) for a new generation of professionals and help bridge the gap.
2. **Accessible Training and Education:** Skilled trades often require short and affordable training programs. Libraries can provide resources and information about apprenticeships, trade schools and on-the-job training, making it easier for individuals to pursue these careers.
3. **Career Satisfaction and Entrepreneurship:** Careers in skilled trades offer the satisfaction of creating something tangible and useful. Additionally, there is potential for entrepreneurship in these fields, allowing individuals to start their own businesses.
4. **Supporting Career Changers:** Many [workers are unhappy in their current jobs](/resources/supporting-work-life-changes-and-job-satisfaction) and are considering a career change. Libraries can support these individuals by providing information and resources about careers in skilled trades.
5. **Community Development:** Skilled trades are essential for maintaining and improving infrastructure, which benefits everyone. By supporting careers in skilled trades, libraries can contribute to the overall development and well-being of their communities.
6. **Combating Stigma:** There is often a stigma associated with pursuing a vocational career, especially among members of Gen Z. Read [Jobber’s Blue-Collar Report](https://getjobber.com/bluecollarreport/) to learn more. Libraries can help change this perception by highlighting the importance and value of skilled trades.
