# Supporting Evidence-Based Practice in Medical Education

Academic and medical librarians can strengthen students’ biomedical research skills and evidence-based practice through four key areas: precision, efficiency, transparency and access to trusted research.

**What You'll Learn:**

- How to strengthen biomedical search strategies and evaluate search effectiveness
- Ways to improve research efficiency without sacrificing rigor
- Strategies for critically evaluating AI-generated information
- How full-text access supports meaningful evaluation of biomedical evidence

##

## How Can Medical Librarians Help Students Develop Better Search Strategies?

Precision begins with translating a clinical question into a focused, reproducible biomedical search strategy. Librarians can help students understand how search terminology and refinement influence which studies are retrieved and which may be overlooked.

Consider a research instruction session on diabetes management. Students could compare searches using keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), then investigate:

- **Search terminology:** How did MeSH, synonyms and Boolean operators influence the relevance and completeness of results?
- **Search refinement:** Did adjustments improve precision without excluding important evidence?

By examining which studies were missed and why, students learn that a search producing fewer results is not necessarily better. Effective strategies balance precision with comprehensive retrieval of relevant evidence.

## How Can Libraries Make Biomedical Research More Efficient?

Efficient research workflows help students navigate complex biomedical literature without sacrificing scholarly rigor. Librarians can demonstrate how saving, refining and rerunning searches reduces unnecessary work and preserves research context.

For example, students can revisit a saved search as new research emerges. Does updated terminology reveal additional studies? Can previous searches be refined without starting over?

These exercises help students develop repeatable research habits, allowing them to spend less time managing searches and more time critically evaluating evidence.

## How Can Medical Librarians Promote Transparency in AI-Assisted Research?

As AI-powered research tools become more common, librarians can help students critically evaluate AI-generated information and verify findings against original sources.

One practical exercise is to compare an AI-generated summary with the full text of a study, assessing whether it accurately reflects the findings and limitations.

**Questions to guide AI evaluation include:**

- **Source verification:** Can the information be traced to a credible research source?
- **Accuracy:** Does the original study support the AI-generated interpretation?
- **Study limitations:** Were important limitations or uncertainties omitted?
- **Interpretation:** Does the summary overstate findings or draw unsupported conclusions?

Students can then revise the summary to reflect the evidence more accurately, reinforcing that AI should support, rather than replace, critical thinking.

## How Can Academic Libraries Improve Access to Biomedical Evidence?

Access to biomedical literature allows students to move beyond abstracts and critically evaluate original research. Librarians can help students locate full-text articles through institutional holdings, available links and library services.

### By connecting full-text access with critical evaluation, librarians help students move from finding relevant literature to understanding the evidence behind research conclusions.

An abstract may highlight a statistically significant result, while the full text reveals important details about methodology, sample size and study limitations. Examining these details helps students distinguish statistical significance from clinical relevance and assess how broadly findings may apply.

Broad collections of current and international biomedical research, such as those available through MEDLINE Ultimate, provide opportunities for students to examine original studies.

By connecting full-text access with critical evaluation, librarians help students move from finding relevant literature to understanding the evidence behind research conclusions.

## Putting the Four Pillars Into Practice

Precision, efficiency, transparency and access provide a practical framework for strengthening medical students' research and information literacy skills.

Through research assignments, students can develop focused search strategies, manage research workflows, evaluate AI-generated information and verify findings against original studies.

Together, these skills prepare students to critically evaluate biomedical evidence throughout their medical education and professional careers.

## Explore the Full Framework

For a deeper look at how these four pillars support medical education, download “A Framework for Academic Libraries: Preparing Medical Students for Evidence-Based Practice.” The guide explores each pillar in greater detail and explains how MEDLINE Ultimate supports biomedical research and learning.
