**What You'll Learn:**

- Transparent search histories support reproducible search strategies.
- Advanced search tools make complex strategies easier to build, document and revisit.
- MeSH, PICOT and research workflow tools improve efficiency without sacrificing search rigor.

Systematic reviews play an important role in evidence-based healthcare by bringing together findings from multiple studies. Producing them requires review teams to develop comprehensive search strategies, document their methods and manage complex searches across an expanding body of biomedical literature.

For medical librarians, this complexity creates both an opportunity and a challenge. Librarians support clinicians, researchers, faculty and students by identifying trusted medical evidence, developing sophisticated search strategies and teaching database and evidence-synthesis skills. Specialized databases and search tools can help them conduct the comprehensive, reproducible literature searches that rigorous systematic reviews require.

## Supporting Transparency and Reproducibility

A systematic review should ensure transparency and reproducibility by fully documenting how the evidence was retrieved. The search history in a database provides this information.

“Researchers need to be able to see the exact search strings, understand how search statements were combined and review the databases searched as a strategy evolves,” said [June Levy](https://about.ebsco.com/health-notes/bio/june-levy-mls), Vice President of Product Management for EBSCO’s research databases. “Search History keeps previous searches accessible, allowing researchers to combine and edit searches and retrieve additional evidence as queries change or become more sophisticated.”

For medical librarians collaborating on evidence-synthesis projects, these capabilities can also make it easier to evaluate a search strategy and help researchers refine it without having to reconstruct earlier steps.

## Managing Complex Search Strategies

Systematic review searches rarely consist of a single query. Researchers may build numerous search strings, add alternative terminology and combine individual search strings into increasingly complex strategies.

Tools designed for advanced searching can reduce some of the friction involved in that process. The Advanced Search Results Page provides an integrated layout that keeps guided search fields, Search History and results together on a single screen. Researchers can adjust detailed queries and work with previous searches while remaining connected to the literature they are evaluating. This integrated experience helps support the complex search demands of systematic reviews.

Search Sets can further support complex projects by allowing researchers to save an entire Search History as a set and rerun it later. This can be particularly valuable for projects that extend over time and require searches to be revisited or updated.

## Improving Efficiency Without Sacrificing Search Rigor

Efficiency in a systematic review means saving time without sacrificing the accuracy or quality of the search. The right tools can make sophisticated research tasks easier to manage while supporting rigorous search practices.

Structured approaches such as PICOT can help researchers identify the key concepts in a clinical question, while MeSH Subject Headings account for different terminology used to describe the same biomedical concept. Pairing MeSH terms with title and abstract keywords can further strengthen a search by helping researchers identify relevant literature that may not yet be indexed with MeSH.

Efficiency also matters when researchers begin evaluating results. Abstracts and tools such as AI Insights and Ask This Document can help researchers assess potentially relevant articles before reviewing the full text. Bulk actions make it easier to work with and export groups of records while expanded citation metadata provides useful information directly within results.

Together, these capabilities can reduce time spent navigating and managing results while preserving the precision and rigor systematic reviews

### As evidence synthesis continues to evolve, libraries need research platforms that support precision while also making complex strategies easier to build, document, save and revisit.

## Supporting the Librarian's Role in Evidence Synthesis

Medical librarians bring specialized expertise to the systematic review process, and effective search tools can make it easier to apply that expertise.

“As evidence synthesis continues to evolve, libraries need research platforms that support precision while also making complex strategies easier to build, document, save and revisit,” Levy said. “The goal is not simply a more powerful search. It is a research environment that supports the transparency, reproducibility and efficiency that rigorous evidence synthesis demands.”

[MEDLINE Ultimate](https://about.ebsco.com/products/research-databases/medline-ultimate) combines trusted biomedical content with advanced search capabilities designed to support these sophisticated research needs. Search History, Search Sets, MeSH Subject Headings and advanced search refinement tools can help medical librarians and review teams build, document, preserve and revisit complex search strategies as evidence-synthesis projects evolve.
