Graphic novels hook readers with immersive illustrations, but it’s the unforgettable characters and rich storytelling that make them come back for more.

Do you have a go-to strategy for helping these readers? Whether they are fans of moving memoirs or space operas, let NoveList break down the best that graphic novels have to offer your adult readers — from webcomics to literary graphic novels.

Join NoveList's April Mazza, Kendal Spires, and Yaika Sabat, as they cover:

  • Popular appeals and themes
  • Authors you want to know

The top row includes "Raging Clouds" by Yoon, showing two women in a dramatic pose against a pink and purple sky, and "Simplicity" by Mattie Lucanaux, depicting a person diving into water with green hues. The bottom row includes "The Knives" by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, with a blue cover showing a cityscape and the title in bold white letters; "We Called Them Giants," featuring an abstract image of large hands holding small figures; and "Dog Days" by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim, with an orange cover displaying multiple illustrations of dogs.

Meet the panelists

Kendal Spires is a Collection Development Librarian for NoveList, where she catalogs graphic novels and manages selection and weeding for Core Collections. She has been reading comics since she was old enough to pluck them off the rack near the supermarket checkout.

April Mazza is a Learning Content Specialist at NoveList, where she develops and teaches course curriculum for Learn with NoveList. She previously worked in public, school, and special library settings. As a kid, April and her older brother would fight over who got to read the Sunday comics first, which turned into a lifelong love of art, illustration, comics, and graphic novels.

Moderator Yaika Sabat is the Manager of Reader Content and Services at NoveList, where she develops strategies for helping readers and trains library staff in the art of recommending books. Before NoveList, she worked in public libraries, and no matter the role, her favorite part of work has always been discussing books.
