Navigation Changes: A Preview
Emma Freeman
Thank you all for joining.
While we are waiting for folks to enter the room, let's get a little conversation going in the chat. You know, we'd love to hear where you're joining us from, and let's go with what you're reading or watching lately. It's always fun. I feel like we do weather a lot, so let's mix it up.
I've been watching this show on Apple TV called Widow's Bay, which I'm a horror fan. If you're not a horror fan, it's not for you, but it was filmed. A lot of it was filmed in Lanes Cove in Gloucester, which is I grew up going there, so it's been really cool to see that. Anyone else from North Shore, Massachusetts, you might want to check it out.
Oh, lots of folks in the chat.
It's going so fast. I can't even keep up.
But we're going to put all of these things on our reading and watching list.
Alright. It looks like our numbers have started to settle a little bit. So I'm going to kick us off, with some housekeeping items.
So hello, everyone, and welcome to our webinar navigation changes preview.
We hope you're all excited to get a closer look at the developments coming for EBSCO platforms this summer.
I'm Emma Freeman, senior marketing manager here at EBSCO. I'm joined by Bonnie Leavitt, VP of product management, and Rachel Hally, senior product manager, and we want to thank you all for being here today.
Before we get started, I just want to note that this session is being recorded, and the recording will be shared with all registrants within the coming week. Due to the size of our audience today, all attendees have been muted to avoid any sound feedback or interruptions.
Live transcription has been enabled, and you can turn this on or off by pressing the CC or live transcript button on your screen.
If you have any questions for our presenters today, please use the q and a function to post them. We will not be monitoring the chat for questions. So please take a moment, locate that q and a function at the bottom of your screen, and again, use that to ask any questions during the webinar.
And due to the large number of participants today, we may not be able to answer all questions during our session. If we are not able to get to your question, someone will be in touch with you after the webinar. But please keep in mind that if you post your question anonymously, we won't be able to follow-up with you as we won't know who asked the question. So keep that in mind when posting in the q and a.
And with that, I'm so excited to turn it over to Bonnie to get us started.
Bonnie Leavitt
Awesome. Thanks, Emma. Good afternoon, good morning, good evening, everyone, whatever time zone you're in. My name is Bonnie Leavitt, vice president of product management. I've been with EBSCO for sixteen years this week. I started fresh out of college, so I hope no one's doing the math now on their computers. I loved Emma's prompt about what are we all reading and watching.
I'm currently reading a book called Yesteryear, which is a New York Times bestseller. It's about an influencer hit or miss, so I can't say if I recommend it yet. And then watching, I'm making my husband rewatch ER with me because I am sad the pit ended for season two, and I needed, some more Noah Wiley in my life. My role at EBSCO as VP is I oversee our teams that build and manage our user interfaces for EBSCO host and EDS and locate, as well as a whole host of other platform line initiatives such as accessibility, globalization, link data, authentication.
So I'm excited to be joined by my colleague, Rachel, today, who I'll pass over to do a quick introduction.
Rachel Hally
Great. Thank you, Bonnie. My name is Rachel Hally. I'm a senior product manager. I work on Bonnie's team bringing updates and innovation to the EBSCOhost and EDS interfaces.
I currently, I'm working a lot on linked data, and I also work on our results page. But one thing that has been taking up a lot of my attention lately is, overseeing the launch of our navigation changes. So I'm excited to be here with you today to talk all about that. I'm currently reading The Wedding People, which I feel like I'm a little late to the party on that one, but I'm really enjoying it.
And I just started a new British series last night called White Heat, that I love. It's about a group of housemates in the nineteen sixties and how they're navigating all of the cultural and social changes that are coming to the UK at that time. Claire Foy is in it. She's fantastic. I highly recommend it.
Back to you, Bonnie.
Bonnie Leavitt
Awesome. And Good Choice on the Wedding People. I read that last year. It's a good book. So what we're going to talk with you today about is some navigation changes that are coming in the upcoming months to both EBSCOhost and EDS. And what we're doing is we're improving the user experience.
We've spent a lot of our development and road map efforts over the last five plus years on building parity with our classic user interface as we start to move and complete moving all of our customers over to our new user interface.
And now that we've reached parity and made us some great enhancements to what we had in classic and made some improvements, we're able to focus on how can we improve the user experience and start to get into innovation and responding to feedback and questions and things like that. And these navigation changes reflect, that focus. So what we're doing for the user experience is we're going to be making it easier to locate post search filters and the interface language options.
We know we have customers worldwide. We know even our US and Canada sites and also other English only speaking have international students. They have international populations. So we need to make it easily accessible to change and set preferred languages.
We're increasing the capacity for additional custom links.
In the current experience, it's limited to four. So we're making some improvements, so that you all can link to more resources that you want to share with your users. We're streamlining some personal account features, so it's more efficient to affiliate, authenticate, and personalize. We're reducing the white space on the new UI.
It's an area of feedback we've had a lot where it feels like there's a lot of white space. So we've struck a nice balance with Rachel show with a strong, accessible, and responsive design while also not having too much white space. And most importantly, we're reintroducing paginated search results. So no more of the infinite scroll and the show more.
We're going back to pagination we know that's important for research interviews and the whole research process.
Next slide. And here's a high-level overview of the changes. And then as Rachel has been leading this work, I'll hand it off to her next to kind of do the big reveal.
So at a high level, we're moving the left-hand navigation, so the dashboard and research tools up to the top.
Our feedback has showed us that the dashboard can take up some valuable real estate, and it can be confusing for some institutions that their users think it's allowing them to access their general library account, where instead it's just their unique EBSCO account.
So we're improving the navigation to better accommodate those use cases.
We're also redesigning the search area. So, like, I know that there's less white space, more clear where there's the search boxes, where there's filters, where there is different tools available.
One of the most exciting parts outside of the pagination is that we are bringing back the option to have the filter panel be pinned down and available on the left side.
So that will be a configurable option for institutions that if they want that filter panel to show, that will now be available for them.
And with that, I will turn it back over to Rachel for the big reveal. Great.
Rachel Hally
Thank you so much, Bonnie.
Okay. So I'm going to be going through, a lot of these items one by one. If you have questions, please add them to the q and a section, and we'll circle back to as many questions as we can fit at the end.
I did design this webinar so that we have plenty of time for questions. So we'll be going through the slides, but then do anticipate, a good chunk of our time to be spent on q and a.
So the big news here is that we are moving that left hand navigation panel from the left-hand side of the screen up to across the top of the screen. So as you can see, this is going to give us a lot of space to work with in terms of reclaiming that space on the left-hand side. We know from a lot of our customer interviews, our user research, that, some of those dashboard items were not commonly used by the vast majority of our users. So we're tucking them away across the top for users to whom those things are very important, but we're not going to be giving so much space over to it, for, the users who just aren't either aren't using them or don't find them quite as important.
So as you can see across the top, we've got, logos on the very left-hand side. To the right of that, we have our new search button, which we've moved from the left-hand side to the top.
We have a browse navigation menu that'll open all of your authorities, and then our research tools and our additional links. So those are places where you can create custom links to link out to, resources that are important to your users at your library.
When we move these things up to the top of the screen, we'll be regrouping some of these navigation items to make them more intuitive to users. So they're all going to be dynamic depending on your subscription, so your users won't see anything that they aren't entitled to see.
That goes for the browse menu in particular. So any of those authorities that you don't have turned on or you don't have access to, those will not appear so that we don't confuse your users.
Anything that you do have access to will be available in that drop down menu. The research tools, you can you can select which ones that you make visible, the supplemental sources, for example, and any other sort of EBSCO resources would fit under that research tools navigation menu.
The additional links menu, this is the one where you can configure currently, you can configure up to four custom links.
We are expanding that to ten custom links. That will not be included in our initial, release, but it's going to be, following very quickly. The initial release will support the existing four links, and then very quickly soon after, we'll be supporting up to ten.
So those are things like ask a librarian, your hours and locations, other resources that you might want to link to.
As Bonnie mentioned, we're moving our language selector. We're taking that out of the My EBSCO menu and putting that directly in that top navigation menu. We hear a lot from not only customers, but our North American based ones as well who have international student bases that that language menu was a little too well hidden in the myEBSCO menu. So we're pulling that out. We're making it easier to find so that anyone who wants to change their preferred language is able to do that easily and intuitively.
So all of these things are going to be across the top, and very accessible and easy to find for all of your users who are looking for these items that they used to access through that left hand navigation panel.
The dashboard is moving to myEBSCO. So, in order to free up that space, we needed to have some place to put all of our dashboard features. So we're moving them into the myEBSCO menu. They will appear listed alongside, personalization options. So you can see on this screen, if somebody's authenticated, they'll be welcomed by name.
They'll be able to access their project folders, their saved items, their recent activity search history, and if it's enabled in their account, holds and checkouts, and then any journal or search alerts that they have set up. So they can change their preferences here. They can manage their account. If they want to sign out, they can. On the right-hand side, you'll see what it'll look like for an unauthenticated user.
They will be presented with all of the same things, but they'll be prompted to create an account if they haven't already done so.
Okay. So this is the redesign of the search bar area. We're tightening up this entire space, like Bonnie mentioned. We have heard a lot of feedback that there's a little too much white space.
It does help with readability, but sometimes, you know, a little too much of a good thing, can happen. So we're tightening this up, and this is going to enable us to pull the results further up on the page to cut down on the amount of scrolling that a user needs to do after they've executed their search and when they want to start interacting with their results. So you can see from this example on the screen, even if you have placards configured, you're getting to the results much faster, than you used to. It's not sort of falling below the fold like it used to in our in our current existing design.
So being able to tighten up that space allows us to present functionality and present results, more quickly and efficiently to users.
Another big one is the filter panel. So we're going to have two options for filter panel configuration.
The default on day one when these changes roll out will be that the filter quick filters at the top will remain exposed. So the all filters, peer reviewed, full text, and date filters, those will all stay exactly where they are currently as quick filters.
If you choose, you can go into configuration in EBSCO Experience Manager and change your default so that instead of having quick filters exposed, you'll have a filter panel exposed, at all So those are the two options here. We know that from our feedback and from our user research, there are some different, user scenarios and user journeys that are happening at all of the different kinds of libraries that we serve. So this is something we felt really strongly about building in some flexibility in terms of which option you wanted to configure for your library. So, if you if your users are more apt to interact with quick filters, then you can keep those exposed all the time. If you want to change, for some more advanced users, perhaps, you can have that filter panel open all the time on the left-hand side.
The way that the quick filters will work, it'll be very similar to how it is today. So if you click into the all filters quick filter, and that that will continue to open the filter panel, but there will be an option for a user to then close it again. So the big difference here is quick filters are rolled up all the time.
When they interact with all filters, that will open a filter panel that can then be closed.
If you choose instead to configure it to have the filter panel open all the time, then there isn't an option for the user to close it. So those that's the big difference between these different options is whether or not a user has the ability to open and close the filter panel.
And like I said, this will be an option. It's a very simple configuration in EBSCO Experience Manager. So on day one, if you decide that for your user group, the filter panel open all the time makes the most sense, you'll be able to go in, make a really quick adjustment, and change that default setting.
Okay. And as Bonnie mentioned, our paginated results, functionality is coming back. So, we heard from a lot of users and a lot of customers that they preferred pagination over our show more results button.
So we're really happy to announce that that's coming back. This, of course, allows users to quickly jump, forward and backward in their results list without having to continue to hit that show more results button and have having that infinite scroll behavior. So really happy to announce that this is coming back. You'll be able to move, forward and back by about seven or eight pages at a time until you get to the end of your results. So this is something that I know a lot of people are very excited about. I'm also very excited about it, and we're really happy that we're able to bring this back to the interface.
So we've gone through a lot of things that are changing about our interface, but I wanted to take just a few moments to talk about the things that are not changing. So, we've just spent, a lot of time creating our advanced search result page, and I want to assure everybody who is using that that nothing there is going to change. So all of that functionality will remain in place.
This is I know this is really important for our power users, our really advanced users. So those guided style search boxes that we've recently added, all of the search history enhancements that have been released over the last six months or so and that continue to release, over the next couple of months will stay in place, and we also are preserving that sticky toolbar as you scroll down your results page.
All of those dashboard options and functionality, they're moving to a new place, but we're not changing the way that they work. So the only thing that's changing there is the placement and the navigation, but you'll still be able to access all of those same dashboard functionalities.
And then probably most importantly, any configurations that you've made to your profiles, those will not be affected at all. So if you have created custom limiters, if you have set up custom links, if you have configured placards, change default settings, and all of those things, your logos, none of that will change.
One question that I'm hearing a lot is what's going to happen to my logos when you move them from the left-hand side to the top? Our developers are creating code that will automatically re size your logos and optimize them for a horizontal display. That goes for your primary logo as well as your secondary logo if you have one of those configured. So you don't need to take any action on day one.
If you do decide to change your logo or add a second logo, or if you've never added a logo and you want to add one now, you can do that. And we do have some helpful guidance that's going out onto our Connect page tomorrow, I believe, on sizing and how to make your logo optimal for the new display. So you have some lead time if you want to change out any of your logos. You have time to do that.
And then a couple of frequently asked questions. We are hearing a lot about whether there will be a preview period. The answer is that there will not be a preview period. This is a little different from when we migrated to our new user interface and had a long preview period.
The reason for this is that our development window is quite short for the amount of work that we're doing in this navigation update, so we're unable to provide a preview or sandbox area for you to preview the changes.
But we do have an updated connect article that we're adding to almost weekly where you can stay abreast of all of these changes. So the good thing about not having a preview period is that you don't have to do anything. You don't have to opt in to any of these changes. Everything will get pushed automatically, and all of those changes will be made globally on our release date.
So that gets us to the big question, which is when is all of this happening? So we do have a launch date. We just decided on it, maybe less than a week ago. So I'm really happy to share with you that our release date is coming up on July seventh.
And just one, I just want to share my thoughts a little bit on the date that we picked. We picked this date specifically so that we would be, provide the least amount of disruption to the most, customers as possibly we could. So we know a lot of our academic, libraries are going to be on either summer or winter break depending on which hemisphere you're in, and we wanted to, hit the sweet spot between our fourth of July holiday in the United States and then our absolute final migration to the new UI, which is later in July. So this this date allows us, the flexibility to support our customers as they go through these navigation changes, without, running too close to that final migration date.
So it's sort of the sweet spot. We recognize that, of course, it's, you know we can't be optimal for a hundred percent of our customers, but based on, some conversations that we had with a lot of customers in our major markets, this seems like the best opportunity, to be as like I said, the least disruptive as we can to your workflows.
So with that, I think we can open it up to any questions that have come into the q and a.
Bonnie Leavitt
Rachel, one thing you may want to touch on because looking through some of the questions is the work, that you're doing with marketing for tutorials and documentation and stuff to help alleviate some of that burden.
Rachel Hally
Okay. Great. So, we are working really closely with our marketing, partners. So with Emma and others, we have, a fantastic person who runs our connect page, Jon Williams.
He and I are working really closely to make sure that we get as many representative screenshots as we can possibly get, updated on our connect page. And then, Jon will be working on, he'll be working with our developers to capture as many, representative videos, screenshots to update all of our connect pages and tutorials, in advance of, the changes going live. So, we're working really hard. We know this is, somewhat disruptive to everyone's workflows and everyone's, marketing materials and training materials.
So trying to be as proactive as we can possibly be to help you out, by providing some of these screenshots and captures ahead of time on our connect pages and then, being there to support any changes or help that you might need as you transition from the current navigation to the new navigation.
Emma Freeman
Yes. I think that's a good segue into the first question, which is someone who is, you know, concerned about the seemingly constant rollouts of new features that make videos outdated by the time they're done. They're wondering if you have any specific time frame in the summer that would be best to create videos given the July seventh launch.
Rachel Hally
So we're going to be working on our videos and tutorials that we host. We're going to be start working on those in late May. We're hoping that we'll have some available in sort of the June time frame. But as far as any videos or tutorials that you create in your own libraries, I want you to rest assured that once we finish this navigation update, we are not anticipating any large changes to come to the interface. Now we are, of course, a company that is always releasing new functionality to our products, but those tend to be smaller and more manageable, not as big changes to the interface as this navigation. So I had somebody ask me about this last week at user group as well, and the answer is we are always making improvements, but I don't think that there's anything on the horizon after this navigation change that will really change the entire layout of the interface. So no worries there.
Emma Freeman
We had a question that's asking, will these updates change where the PICO search box is on the page as well?
Rachel Hally
So the PICO search box will not change. The position of that will not change. So it's currently right above the search box, on the advanced search screen, and that will stay exactly where it is. And the functionality of the PICO search box will not be changing in this update.
Emma Freeman
And we had a question. It might be helpful to review which interfaces are impacted by this. Someone asked if it's applied to NoveList Plus as well.
Rachel Hally
Yes. Okay. Great question. So the screens that I show today are mainly from EBSCO Discovery Service and EBSCOhost, but these changes are rolling out to other interfaces like business searching interface, Explora, and Novelist.
One thing that I'm working with our, marketing crew on is getting some images for, Explora, BSI, and Novelist onto our connect page. Those should be going up onto our Connect page tomorrow. We also have some slides that are available that cover those product pages and what the changes will look like there. So there it's going to be very similar to the screens that you saw today, just nestled within those native interfaces for Explorer, BSI, and NoveList.
So check out our Connect page later this week, and you'll be able to see those representative screenshots for products besides EDS and eHost.
Emma Freeman
Awesome. And I think that's going to knock out a couple of the questions. So, yeah, just check out that connect page to review which interfaces are affected.
Oh, we had a question. Can you bring back the shareable results link?
Bonnie Leavitt
So I can take that to give Rachel a break from talking.
So right now on the results page, the URL bar for this user interface is what we call durable, meaning they copied and shared, and may ask you to log in again, but you won't get the session time out. We are considering a future road map item to add the ability to permalink a search result.
Not on the near term, but as we get that work prioritized, we'll make sure to update the road map. That is a frequent request we've heard.
Emma Freeman
Thank you, Bonnie.
Next up, will there be any type of save and bulk email saved articles function available outside of my EBSCO slash without an account?
Bonnie Leavitt
Yep. So that will still stay the same way it is today where if you're not personalized into your myEBSCO account, you can still save items, and those will still show in the dashboard section in the new location. We just will continue to have the prompt reminding the user that if they end the session or leave their computer, those results aren't saved, so they're encouraged to personalize.
Emma Freeman
Thank you.
Do you have a basic handout or video showing how to create an EBSCO account?
I actually went and dug up our connect article on that. So I'm going to drop that in the chat right now for folks if you want a review on how to create EBSCO accounts.
Next up, when will all the visual changes be finalized? I'd like to minimize having to update screenshots.
Rachel Hally
Yeah. So these this is all going to roll out July seventh. And then so the things that you've seen today and the things that are on our connect page are in their final state. So we're not anticipating, a lot of changes.
There might be minor tweaks here and there. But, at this point in the development, we've got everything pretty much locked down. So, the screenshots that you can see on connect and that you've seen today are representative of what the final product is going to look like on July seventh after the rollout. So I would just encourage you to take a look at that Connect page, and you'll be able to, see and capture any of those screenshots there that you might want to start using in your internal training materials.
Emma Freeman
So thank you. And just as a reminder for some other related questions, that is a global automatic rollout. There's no opt in done on your end.
Bonnie Leavitt
Yep.
Emma Freeman
Question. Will scripture search tool in Atla be available under the browse?
Rachel Hally
Yes. So that's one of our authorities that will be moving from the left-hand side up to the top under that browse navigation menu.
Emma Freeman
Awesome. Will the saved be updated so that you could delete more than one article at a time?
Rachel Hally
Yes. This is act that's a great question. We actually released this functionality not too long ago, so you can already do this. You can bulk unsave, from your saved folder, under my dashboard.
So I think you can select up to fifty at a time. I'm not positive about that. Sorry. Don't quote me.
But you can already go in and bulk select, items to unsave from your saved folders.
Emma Freeman
Will the advanced search options be visible without having to navigate away from one's current search results?
Rachel Hally
Yes. So that's that kind of brings us back to that, sticky toolbar that I was mentioning earlier. That's going to be preserved. So, you will you can still just scroll back up to the top of the page to see all of those advanced search options, like the guided style search boxes and all of your search history. Those aren't going anywhere.
Emma Freeman
And someone asked, to confirm if we can turn off those clackers. I think they were referring to when you said placards. Can those be turned off?
Rachel Hally
So placards are something that you have to enable in EBSCO Experience Manager. So if that's something that you don't already have turned on in your profiles, they will not appear once we do the navigation update in July. So no worries there. If that's something that you don't already have configured, you don't need to worry about it. They won't just magically appear. They're all. All of those placards are, opt in.
Emma Freeman
And just to review the logo information, we had a question. Will we be able to configure secondary logo in the branding settings, and where will those appear in the new design?
Rachel Hally
Yes. So, if you already have them configured, you don't need to do anything. If you have the primary and the secondary logo configured in, the configuration module of EBSCO Experience Manager, those will all transfer over just fine. The secondary logo and the primary logo will both appear in that upper left-hand corner of the page.
So I think the screenshot that I showed only have one logo configured, but we will be sure to put a screenshot in, connect that, is showing I think there's already one there, actually, that shows what it looks like if you have two logos configured. So you'll have the primary one appearing first and the secondary one appearing to the right-hand side of it, on the page. And there's nothing that you need to do. We're optimizing the sizing for you.
If you do choose to change your logo, there are some tips and tricks that will be, mounted on Connect by tomorrow about, the optimal sizing and ratios for, putting logos up onto the interface.
Emma Freeman
Alright. Question. Will a sandbox version of the interface be available before changes are made live?
Rachel Hally
Unfortunately, we're not able to provide a sandbox environment for this change. The development window is just a little too short for us to provide something like that, which is why we're trying to put as many representative screenshots on our connect page as we possibly can.
Emma Freeman
Question. Is natural language search changing to AI assisted search?
Rachel Hally
Yes. So this is something that is it's not happening with the navigation change project, but it's going to be released at just around the same time. So we are changing the name of natural language search to AI assisted search. There's nothing that you need to do. That change will just be made automatically, and it's based on some feedback that we've heard, that users are a little unclear about what natural language search means. So we're changing it to something that's a little more obvious that they're getting a little lift from AI in their search there.
Emma Freeman
We had a question. Can you clarify how the filter panel configuration will function? I'm confused on that change.
Rachel Hally
Sure. So there will be two options. The default setting and what will roll out to all profiles on July seventh is to preserve the quick filters at the top of the page just below the search bar. If you want to keep those, quick filters there, you don't need to take any action at all.
If you prefer to have the filter panel open at all times for your users on particular profiles, you'll be able to go into config, the configuration module of EBSCO Experience Manager and make that change, starting July seventh. So the options are quick filters open or exposed at the top of the screen at all times or the filter panel open at all times. So those are the two choices that you have depending on what works best for your users.
Emma Freeman
Awesome. There was a way to select multiple databases. Will that still be available?
Rachel Hally
Yes. So all of that kind of functionality, database selection, all of those types of things, nothing is changing there, and you'll still be able to click, above the search box in EBSCOhost to expose all of the databases that you have configured for that profile, and users will be able to select or deselect as they want to and then execute their search.
Emma Freeman
Does the does this meet accessibility requirements up to standards of WCAG 2.2 AA? Yep.
Bonnie Leavitt
Yes. So Great.
Rachel Hally
I'll no. I'll hand that one over to Bonnie.
Bonnie Leavitt
This is, fully needs 2.2 AA standard, and we're in full compliance for the US title to accessibility regulations, which just got delayed. We are doing an updated third-party audit for accessibility on the new user interface once these changes go live to make sure that our audits and ACRs are updated with the new navigation changes. And once that audit and ACR is updated, they will be available on our accessibility page on EBSCO Connect and also you can get to it from ebsco.com.
Emma Freeman
Alright.
Regarding pagination, we have a couple questions. Could you provide a number box so users can jump to a specific page of results?
Rachel Hally
Yes. So what happens is if you scroll down and you get into the navigation section, you can select the page that you jump to so you don't have to go through them one by one. So if you want to go, if pages one through ten are displayed, you can jump right to ten, and then that will push your options up from ten to twenty. So you'll be, you know, constantly moving through, but not page by page by page.
Emma Freeman
And then someone mentioned regarding pagination, including the ability for users to configure the number of results that are displayed per page up to one hundred would be nice. Give several options.
Rachel Hally
I agree. Up to a hundred would be nice. Currently, we're offering up to fifty.
That is another thing that's configurable in the configuration module for those of you who might not have heard when we released that.
Currently, you can, go into EBSCO Experience Manager in the configuration module and select how many results you want to display on the results list. So, currently, the options are ten, twenty, thirty, or fifty, and we, are always looking at future enhancements, whether or not we can expand that to more than fifty. We are we do some periodic tests to see, how that would be handled in terms of our responsiveness. So, that's definitely something that's on the horizon. It hasn't been, added to our road map yet, but it's definitely something that we've heard from other customers and continue to, investigate and observe the behavior that we would consider acceptable in terms of how long it takes a page to load.
Emma Freeman
Will there be changes to the option to show search history? I was not able to see it in the options. I'm a health librarian. This is very important for my user groups.
Rachel Hally
Yes. So nothing is changing there. I know we've made a lot of changes recently, to the interface around search history, especially for those advanced users like medical users. None of that is changing. So, all of the great functionality that our colleagues have brought to you around search history is remaining exactly the same. So nothing about that will change due to, when the navigation updates go live in July.
Emma Freeman
Will there be a setting to keep the advanced search boxes on the results page, or will it always default to the single search box?
Rachel Hally
So right now, if you choose to if you choose to configure the advanced search results page, part of that, is those three guided style search boxes will remain on that page. This is another setting in the configuration module of EBSCO Experience Manager. So there's a connect page all about the advanced search results page as well. So if you, haven't configured that yet and you need some guidance on that, I would recommend looking at that connect page, which will show you exactly what steps to take in EBSCO Experience Manager to set up that advanced search results page, which preserves those, guided search boxes on the advanced search results page.
Emma Freeman
Thank you.
I'm just watching the clock and seeing how many questions we have left. I was scrolling through.
Is batch export ever coming back?
Bonnie Leavitt
So I can take that. So we have the ability to bulk in the interface now. So we support, metadata export for up to 25,000 records at a time. That's available in that top, bulk toolbars icon, on the top of the result list.
We do have the requirement that a user must be personalized. And the reason we added that requirement, is for security reasons, both for EBSCO and the institution. So if we see a user making what looks like a harvesting attempt, we can pinpoint that specific personal user ID and shut that down versus having to potentially restrict an entire IP range at the university or terminate access across the university.
And the reason we also do the personalization and have a limit on the number of exports is to make sure from a harvesting and malicious, perspective that we don't have users who can get in there and are trying to export entire databases, especially more small and niche a and I only databases.
So the functionality is there, and we are actually making some enhancements to that coming in June and July around better handling of bulk export for results sets between five hundred and a couple thousand. So it works right now for fifty and up to 25,000, but we know there's many use cases, especially for systematic literature review. Where a user may just want five hundred or two thousand, so we're making some improvements to support a batch export, of five hundred at a time.
Emma Freeman
Someone asked, am I right in saying that if we opt to have the full filter panel op open by default, that it will not include the myEBSCO dashboard features in that panel and that there will be no option to keep my dashboard visible in the left-hand panel?
Rachel Hally
But that's correct. If you choose to have the filter panel open whether you choose to have the filter panel open or not, the My Dashboard items are moving into the myEBSCO menu at the top of the page. So that will be true for everybody regardless of which decision they make for having the filter panel open or closed.
Emma Freeman
Will search suggestions be updated so that they have quotes around phrases in the new version since that's a requirement now?
Rachel Hally
So that's not part of our navigation update. I can take that back to our team who works on it and see if they have an update that we could then provide as a follow-up, but I don't know the answer to that. I don't believe there's anything on the road map for something like that. But I want to double check my answer, unless, Bonnie, you know something that I don't know about this. Nope. Okay.
But nothing will be changing there, as part of the navigation update.
Emma Freeman
How do my EBSCO users share folders with others in the new interface?
Rachel Hally
So right now, we don't actually have an option to share folders with others. This is something that we have heard feedback from customers. There I believe there's an enhancement request out there for it, that we could possibly try to share after this, recording. So this is something that we've heard, from other people as well that they would like the ability to share their folders and projects. And it's something that we're looking at, but we haven't, put it on the road map yet.
Emma Freeman
Another question is, can we customize the language in the top navigation?
Bonnie Leavitt
Yes. So that's a customizable option of whatever you want your default language to be for the user interface, excuse me, at the profile level, and then you can also choose the default secondary So if there's two primary languages spoken by users of your institution, you can default those both. And then when a user clicks that globe icon like Rachel showed, they'd see the default, the secondary, and then all the other thirty-three language choices that we offer in the user interface.
Emma Freeman
Will database subject groups become available again?
Bonnie Leavitt
So that's not something on our immediate road map, but it's something, you know, we always continually review enhancement request and in conversations with our customers and also our sales teams and across our product management organization. So we're still monitor all of our enhancement request, and as those start to gain in popularity or we see an increase in request, then we review and determine if it makes sense to add to the road map.
Emma Freeman
Can you talk more about what is in the browse menu versus the research tools menu?
Rachel Hally
Sure. So the quick answer is that in the browse menu, those are going to be all of the publication authorities that you have access to based on your subscriptions. So things like the publication authority, subject authorities for various areas. Somebody mentioned the ATLA authority file. Those will all be under the browse menu. And then the research tools are things like your supplemental sources integrations, and other, EBSCO based tools that you might have access to, like the content or concept map, things like that. So, just think of the browse as browsing your authorities and then the research tools as things that you would link out to.
Emma Freeman
Will database descriptions be returning when selecting from the list of EBSCO database options?
Bonnie Leavitt
That's also one of the common enhancement requests that we're monitoring.
Right now, based on what we hear from all of our customers, there is something critical mass to merit adding those back. But like I just noted, we always continually monitor our enhancement requests. So encourage customers. If it's something they really want, reach out to support through EBSCO Connect, and they can get you added to that enhancement request, and those flow directly to our product organization.
Emma Freeman
Okay. So we have a few that are kind of, like, parallel questions. I have to see if we can pick out new information.
Bonnie Leavitt
I'm noticing a few about the AI assisted and the natural language charts, so I'm happy to give a quick kind of update. So as Rachel noted in earlier in the q and a, we are going to rename our natural language search option to AI assisted search, because most of our users, while they search a natural language search, they're not coming in thinking, oh, let me toggle on natural language search so I can ask the search bar question.
So we're relabeling an AI assisted search both to make it a little more clear of what it's doing and also, show the user that it is using AI behind the scenes.
That setting is completely optional to show or not show on the result list.
And you can also make it the optional or maybe default it off, but you present the toggle to your users so they can choose to invoke that when they're in the platform doing searches. And as Rachel noted, the rename from natural language search to AI assisted search, will roll out with the navigation changes. It's releasing right around the same time.
Emma Freeman
Excellent. Will the methodology limiter be available on more than APA databases? Would also be useful for CINAHL and others.
Bonnie Leavitt
We're happy to pass that feedback, back to our product manager for CINAHL. Right now, it is unique to the APA databases, but always happy to share that feedback.
Emma Freeman
Will the e-book search interface allow us to feature collections we've created? I'd love to create custom collections for certain courses, and I'd also appreciate if the page clearly stated students were searching e-books. The search interface looks like Academic Search Premier.
Bonnie Leavitt
That is also great feedback. We're happy to pass that back to our e-book colleagues. I will note one of the e-book related things that is coming back to the EBSCOhost and EBSCO Discovery Service UI, in September is the ability to have e-book carousels, based off your EBSCO eBooks, on the search landing page.
So that is a common request too that we're bringing back.
Emma Freeman
Just looking around. We've had a lot of questions, related to the database selector, like, selecting multiple databases, clicking the name to change databases. Lots of people are asking about that.
It seems like they're suggesting it's not necessarily intuitive. I don't know if we have any thoughts about that.
Multiple database selection option.
Bonnie Leavitt
Yeah. That is something we continue to monitor and discuss with our user research and design team.
So if we are planning any changes on there, we'll make sure we'll communicate that out through our road map and also through, email.
And I'll also note too for any other questions that we didn't answer. If you want more in-depth, feel free to reach out to your EBSCO sales team. And they're all well versed in this or definitely know how to get Rachel and I involved, and happy to do any follow-up discussions or a quick demo to get you prepared and onboard for these changes.
Emma Freeman
Any changes to integration of products like LibGuides, Chat, or Niche Academy?
Rachel Hally
So no changes to the to those integrations.
They'll all still be available for you to configure in the configuration module of EBSCO Experience Manager if you if you choose to configure those. So that's still anything that you already have configured will remain the same, and you'll still be able to add configurations in the future if you choose to implement any of those integrations.
Emma Freeman
Okay. Here's a question. Is it possible to have a clear all feature that doesn't clear the filters that doesn't clear the filters and expanders that we have enabled as a default setting?
For example, in our case, available through Wellesley, also search within full text and apply equivalent subjects.
Bonnie Leavitt
So this is kind of a two part on the clearing. So we have a net new setting available in the user interface that was actually our largest and longest standing enhancement request from our classic inner user interface, and that is sticky filters. So when you're doing a search, if you just want to change the search terms or add a search level or change a Boolean operator, etcetera, there's an option in that all filters panel to lock down your filters, and limiters as they currently are. So those won't erase as you change your search term. We also now, in our user interface, carry over the EBSCO admin setting for clear find field after searching. So if you have that setting enabled in EBSCO admin, where the search field, will clear out after you've executed a search, that is now being honored. And both of those, if you want to learn more, we have pages on EBSCO Connect to talk about them.
Emma Freeman
Here's a general informational question. Is EBSCO Experience Manager adjustable by users or only by institutional administrators?
Bonnie Leavitt
So it's only by institutional administrators.
Our eventual end goal is to replace EBSCO admin with EBSCO experience manager. Obviously, like we saw with the building of the user interface, it's really hard to take a fifteen-year-old product used by everyone for soup to nuts and move it over to something new. So that's a longer term play. But any net new features like this stuff and any new features and settings that we release for the user interface will be managed in EBSCO Experience Manager, specifically the configuration module in there.
Emma Freeman
Yeah. We've had a few questions about just EBSCO Experience Manager in general.
When is it going to be the main administrative tool? All that's like, are we going to provide checklist of functionalities that they need to implement in Experience Manager once this goes live if we want to talk a little bit more in-depth about that whole process?
Bonnie Leavitt
Sure. So on the great connect pages Rachel's put together, on these navigation changes, those include details on where you need to go in EBSCO Experience Manager and that configuration portal to make these specific updates.
At a larger level, in general, we do have some connect documentation that's kind of a where you go for what between the configuration portal and EBSCO admin. So that's helpful. We're also where we can embedding help documentation and details into EBSCO admin in the configuration portal. So you so when an administrator's in there, they know where to go for what, and there's easy access to documentation about how to interact with those features.
The final thing I'll note is for EBSCO Experience Manager, it just uses your My EBSCO account if you have a personal account. So for anyone that doesn't currently hasn't been in there or wants to go ahead and access it, you can just go to experience.ebsco.com, sign in with your myEBSCO account, and then that will flow through our system to make sure you're affiliated to the right institution and given the right levels of access.
Emma Freeman
Will we be able to opt out of using AI assisted search?
Bonnie Leavitt
Yep. All of our AI tools are optional and configurable by the institution.
Emma Freeman
How will users access thesauri other than subject headings in the new navigation?
Rachel Hally
So all of those thesauri do you mean, like I guess, the user the question is about accessing the thesauri from the detailed record page, that will remain the same. So if there's a subject's tab on the detailed record page, that's not going anywhere. So the only thing that will change is anything that was listed in the left-hand side will now be in that browse menu at the top.
Emma Freeman
Awesome.
And I saw a couple of folks have asked about, you know, resources that we are going to be sharing in our follow-up because we are approaching the end of time here.
We are going to be sharing recording of this presentation and the slides. We can also include the links that we have included in chat, someone asked about that, to the connect page, to, you know, the how to create a myEBSCO account, all of those resources that we've shared throughout. We will put that in the follow-up email as well.
And then it looks like we had we had so many questions from you all, which is great across a lot of common themes. So we're going to take these back, boil them down, find some commonalities, and just redo our frequently asked questions addressing a lot of those common things that were brought up in our q and a today. But thank you all so much. We had over a hundred questions, so that's unheard of at our webinars. So really appreciate all of your engagement and stay tuned. Thank you so much, Rachel and Bonnie, for this wonderful presentation. Any final comments you'd like to make?
Bonnie Leavitt
Nope. We're excited for this. Appreciate the great questions, and hope everyone has a great rest of their day.
Emma Freeman
Yes. Thank you. So keep an eye on your inbox for a follow-up email and on EBSCO Connect for more information coming soon.
Thank you all so much.
