The Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) has implemented FOLIO to modernize library workflows and better support data-intensive agricultural research, with the help of EBSCO FOLIO Services. BUAN selected FOLIO for its ability to accommodate specialized datasets, safeguard against single-vendor dependencies, and foster local technical skill-building within the library team.
“FOLIO’s modular design lets our librarians connect specialized collections and data sources to core library workflows without the custom coding typical of proprietary systems,” said Jan Seanego, Director, Library and Information Services, BUAN. “Because the platform is open source, our ICT team can refine functionality in-house and contribute those improvements back to the global community.”

Currently, more than 300 libraries worldwide use EBSCO-supported FOLIO, benefiting from its collaborative ecosystem where libraries, vendors, and developers co-create innovative services and accelerate platform updates. The African FOLIO community is steadily expanding, with multiple institutions across the region embracing the platform and contributing to its development. BUAN’s adoption strengthens this momentum and positions Botswana as an active participant in shaping library technology that supports regional research priorities.
“BUAN’s research priorities require a library platform that can evolve rapidly,” noted Bronwyn Rassmann, Director of SaaS Innovation, Sub-Saharan Africa at EBSCO Information Services. “FOLIO delivers that adaptability along with EBSCO’s proven hosting and support.”
